Have you ever downloaded a checklist, guide, or template from a website because it looked helpful?
If so, you’ve already experienced the power of a freebie.
A few years ago, I thought email marketing was something only big businesses worried about. I had a photography business to run, sessions to edit, and clients to serve. Building an email funnel felt like one more thing to add to an already full plate.
Then I created a simple freebie.
Nothing fancy. No massive course. No 50-page ebook.
Just something genuinely useful for the people I wanted to work with.
And that’s when everything started to click.
That one freebie became the starting point of an email funnel that now helps me grow my email list, build trust with potential clients, collect reviews, and book photography sessions without constantly posting on social media.
Hi, I’m Christine
I’m a photographer, educator, and Flodesk fan who loves finding simple ways to connect with people online without spending all day marketing.
If you’re trying to grow your photography business and want an easier way to stay connected with potential clients, check out my guide on how I use Flodesk. It’s the exact system I use to build and automate my email funnel.

Freebie? Email Funnel? What Are We Even Talking About?
Let’s start with the basics.
A freebie is something valuable you give away for free in exchange for an email address.
Some examples include:
- Photography planning guides
- What-to-wear guides
- Location recommendation lists
- Family session preparation checklists
- Wedding timeline templates
- Camera setting cheat sheets
A freebie is often called a lead magnet because it attracts people who are interested in what you offer.
An email funnel is what happens after someone downloads that freebie.
Instead of receiving one email and never hearing from you again, subscribers enter a series of automated emails designed to introduce who you are, share helpful information, and build trust. They can also answer common questions and encourage inquiries or bookings.
Think of it like a conversation that starts automatically.
The freebie opens the door, and the email funnel keeps the conversation going.
Why a Freebie Isn’t Just a Nice-to-Have—It’s a Lead Magnet That Works While You Sleep
One of the biggest challenges photographers face is moving people from social media to their website and email list, where they’re not dependent on ever-changing algorithms.
Social media platforms change constantly, and it can be very frustrating.
Your email list is different.
When someone joins your list through a freebie, you’ve created a direct connection.
That’s powerful.
A good lead magnet works around the clock.
Someone can find your website at midnight, download your freebie, and immediately enter your email funnel without you lifting a finger.
That’s why I love automation.
Instead of trying to manually follow up with every visitor, the system does the work for me.
All of this happens in a very efficient and consistent way, and consistency is what helps to build trust.

What Happens After the Download: The Email Funnel That Builds Trust on Autopilot
Here’s where many business owners get stuck.
They create a freebie and people download it, but then…nothing. No follow-up, relationship, or next step.
That’s a missed opportunity.
The real value comes from the email funnel that follows.
When someone downloads one of my freebies, they receive a series of emails over time, which might include:
- Helpful photography tips
- Answers to common client questions
- Behind-the-scenes stories
- Session preparation advice
- Client experiences
- Information about working with me
Each email serves a simple purpose.
It helps people get to know me before they ever reach out.
By the time many subscribers inquire, they already feel familiar with my approach because they’ve spent time inside my email funnel.
That’s the beauty of automation. You can build relationships at scale without feeling salesy.
Social media is great, but it’s not the only way people can find you. That’s one reason I’m such a fan of combining SEO with an email funnel strategy, read more here!

Real Talk: How My Freebie Funnel Brings in Clients, Reviews, and Email Subscribers
When I first started using Flodesk, I wasn’t looking for a complicated marketing system.
I wanted something simple.
What I needed was a way to deliver freebies automatically, grow my email list and stay connected with subscribers. I also wanted to encourage reviews, and nurture potential client relationships.
That’s exactly what my email funnel helps me do.
People discover a free resource, they join my list, and they receive valuable emails.
Some eventually book sessions.
Others leave reviews.
Many simply stay connected until they’re ready- and that’s really okay!
An email funnel gives them a reason to remember you when that time comes, and that’s much harder to accomplish with a single social media post.
My email funnel doesn’t just help me stay connected with potential clients. It also helps me consistently collect reviews from happy customers – learn more here!
How to Create a Freebie That Actually Helps (and Converts)
Here’s where many photographers overcomplicate things, because they think their freebie needs to be huge.
It doesn’t-in fact, simpler is often better.
The best freebies solve one specific problem.
Ask yourself:
“What question do clients ask me all the time?”
That’s usually where your best ideas are hiding.
Some examples:
- What should we wear for family photos?
- Where are the best locations for photos in our area?
- How do we prepare young kids for a session?
- What should we expect during a newborn session?
Create a resource that answers one of those questions clearly.
A strong lead magnet should be easy to understand, quick to consume, immediately useful, and relevant to your ideal client.
The goal isn’t to impress people, it’s to help them.
When your freebie genuinely helps someone, your email funnel starts from a place of trust.
That’s a much better foundation than trying to sell immediately.
Your freebie and email funnel can do a lot of the heavy lifting behind the scenes, but I still love connecting with photographers in real time. If you’d like more photography business tips, marketing ideas, and a behind-the-scenes look at my business, come follow along on Instagram. I’d love to connect with you there, too.

Don’t Let Your Freebie Just Sit There—Let It Work For You
Creating a freebie is only half the process, the next step is putting it to work.
Add it to:
- Your website homepage
- Blog posts
- Contact pages
- Social media profiles
- Instagram link pages
- Pinterest content
Then connect it to an email funnel that continues the conversation.
That’s where the magic happens.
Instead of attracting visitors once, you’re creating an ongoing connection.
Instead of hoping someone remembers you later, you’re staying in touch consistently.
And instead of manually following up with every lead, your system is doing the heavy lifting behind the scenes.
A simple freebie may seem small, but paired with the right email funnel, it can become one of the hardest-working tools in your photography business.
