Senior year is a whirlwind. Between juggling classes, college apps, and trying to make the most of every “last” moment, it’s easy to let some things slide to the bottom of the to-do list. But let me just say, when it comes to senior photos, it’s not something you want to skip. Trust me, your future self will thank you for making the time.
This blog is your behind-the-scenes look at why senior photos actually matter, how to make your session feel like you, and yes—how to avoid outfit meltdowns. As a San Diego family photographer, I’ve shot countless senior portraits, and I guarantee that they come out great and end up being fun. I’ve got you covered. Contact me to get started!
Why Senior Photos Are More Than Just a Yearbook Thing
Your senior photos aren’t like every other grade photo you’ve gotten used to taking. Unlike those, these aren’t just for the yearbook. Having a solid one in there is definitely a win, but these photos are about capturing a moment in time that only happens once.
Think about it: how often do you get to freeze this exact version of yourself? The one who’s standing on the edge of something new, full of ideas and plans and maybe a little bit of nervous energy. That’s what these photos are for.
Senior photos tell your story. Not the posed-and-polished version, but the real one. The version with your favorite shoes, the genuine laugh, and maybe a tiny bit of wind in your hair.
Bottom line? Senior photos are a chance to celebrate everything you’ve accomplished and everything you’re dreaming up next. And that’s way more meaningful than just a yearbook slot.

High School vs. College Seniors—Different Seasons, Same Magic
I shoot senior photos for both high school and college grads, and while the vibes can be totally different, the magic is the same.
High school seniors are usually buzzing with anticipation. It’s all prom dates, college prep, and that first real taste of freedom (remember that feeling?). College grads, on the other hand, often show up with a little more grit. They’ve been through it. The late-night study sessions, the group projects, the ramen dinners. And now? They’re stepping into the real world like the bosses they are.
No matter which stage you’re in, these photos are about celebrating YOU. Not the curated version. The real deal.
What Makes a Great Senior Session? Spoiler: It’s Not Just the Outfit
Don’t get me wrong, outfits matter (we’ll get to that in a sec), but a great senior session is about way more than what you’re wearing.
What really makes the session amazing is you. It’s your energy, confidence, and personality showing up and owning the moment.
That’s why I make it my mission to create a space where you can be yourself. Whether you’re goofy, reserved, dramatic, or a little bit of everything, I want you to feel like your shoot is fun, not stressful. That means no fake smiles!
The best senior photos come from moments where you forget the camera is even there. That’s when the magic happens.

Real Talk: What to Expect at a Senior Shoot with Me
Okay, let’s break it down. If you’ve never done a photo session before—or if your last one involved crying toddlers and forced smiles (hello, family holiday card)—here’s the lowdown.
First, I’ll guide you through everything. You do not have to know how to pose. I’ve got your angles, your good side, and your “should I put my hands in my pockets?” questions covered.
We’ll laugh, we’ll wander, we’ll probably chase some golden hour light. I’ll give direction when you need it, play music if I think we need to shake it off, and hype you up the entire time. Basically, I’m your personal confidence coach with a camera.
We’ll take a good amount of posed photos, including the iconic cap and gown photo, but I want you to be yourself as well. The candids in between poses and locations often make the best options.
Expect a laid-back vibe, lots of movement, and zero pressure to be anyone but yourself.
My Favorite San Diego Spots for Senior Sessions
One of the best parts about living and working in San Diego? The locations are chef’s kiss perfect. Beaches, cliffs, parks, cute downtown streets, you name it.
Here are a few of my go-to spots for senior photos:
- Balboa Park – It’s classic for a reason. Gorgeous architecture, blooming gardens, and plenty of spots to switch up the background.
- Windansea Beach – That golden light hits just right here, and the rocky coastline adds a whole vibe.
- Sunset Cliffs – A little more dramatic (in the best way). Great for grads who want something bold and beautiful.
- North Park or South Park – These neighborhoods are full of color, murals, and charm. Perfect for a more urban feel.
Want something more off-the-beaten-path? I’ve got a secret list of hidden gems I love, and I’m always scouting new spots (yes, I totally take mental notes whenever I’m out for tacos).

How to Prep (Without Stressing Out or Fighting About Clothes)
Let’s keep this simple, yeah? Prepping for your senior session doesn’t need to turn into a week-long event or a closet explosion.
Here’s my go-to advice:
- Bring 3 outfits – One dressier (something you’d wear to a nice dinner), one casual (jeans and a favorite tee totally count), and one that includes your school gear (like a hoodie or jersey).
- Make sure you feel good in each outfit – Confidence shows up in photos more than any trend ever will. If you’re constantly adjusting something or feel weird in it? Ditch it.
- Keep it YOU – You don’t need to reinvent your style for this shoot. If you’re a sneakers-and-sweatshirt kind of person, we can make that look amazing. If you love dresses and heels, go for it.
- Don’t overthink it – Bring a brush, maybe some lip balm, and a bottle of water. That’s it.
And please, don’t stress about pimples, braces, or “I just feel awkward.” That’s normal. I promise, you’re going to look amazing!
Your Senior Photos Are a BIG Deal
Senior photos are more than a rite of passage. They’re a celebration. A time capsule. A little gift to your future self (and your future kids who will one day roast your fashion choices).
So if you’re on the fence about booking a senior session, here’s your nudge: DO IT.
Let’s capture this season of your life in a way that feels real, joyful, and totally you. You bring the personality, I’ll bring the camera.
Sound good? Let’s make some photo magic together.
